If you care to take the herbal route, I can make two suggestions. The first is a combination of Yucca and Devil's Claw. They are anti-inflammatories. Be advised that they work better after you have taken them for a few days - it gets better every day. The second suggestion is Turmeric. It is also a great anti-inflammatory. The nice thing about both these remedies is that they will not injure your liver and kidneys like over the counter meds or prescription drugs.

Tylenol (don't exceed label directed doses). Capsaicin cream (Zostrix, etc.) If you use Capsaicin, keep it off your hands. I would apply with cheap disposable gloves. If you get any in your eyes or private area you'll be sorry. Apply 4x daily, it'll burn going on, and I'd use the 0.075% if you can tolerate it. Allow up to 2 weeks for maximum benefit. Ice your joints in the evening, heat in the morning. For bad knees, non weight bearing excercises that strengthen the quardriceps (extension excercises) are helpfull. Low doses of the old tricyclic antidepressants are good for chronic pain and will help you sleep if you can tolerate them. I would avoid COX-2's, I think the population that will really benefit from them is very small, as if you need to take aspirin for heart disease or stroke prevention there's no safety advantage of any of them over other NSAIDS, they're much more expensive and there's the concern of a class effect in increasing the risk of heart attacks.

Osteoarthritis

Herbal Remedies

Many herbal remedies are useful for arthritic sufferers. Depending on your condition, and the availability of herbal products, some remedies might be more suitable than others. Fresh juices are more easily absorbed by the body and capture the whole synergistic complex of healing ingredients locked in the plant. Find the one that works best for you.

Boswellia has unique anti-inflammatory action, much like the conventional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used by many for inflammatory conditions. Unlike NSAIDs, however, long-term use of boswellia does not lead to irritation or ulceration of the stomach.

Well, I have arthritis, and I take a prescription drug called Mobic. Even though it helps a lot, it has potential side effects I don't like, so I take it only a couple of times a week. Usually Tylenol works really well......but if you check the pharmacy you can find herbal remedies that work pretty well too, like glucosamine. The best defense though, is to keep moving.
