I would consider almost any kind except romance - I'm not sure I could stomach that. I usually prefer male authors as well.

If you like the lord of the rings genre, I would recommend Eregon, and the follow up book Eldest by Christopher Paolini. I just read, and re-read them both. Also, Eregon (the movie) will be coming out late in the year.

The Beach House, by James Patterson. All the Patterson books are great, but this is my favorite by far! I guarantee you'll like it.

The Mortal device sequence. it really is surprising. e book one is called 'city of Bones' and its a mystery. study the precis on-line once you're in contact :) the movie is popping out August 2013. i imagine you'll like it
