Some people do not realise, or cannot accept how much the neo-cons have stolen and twisted their party.
As a conservative myself, I believe in small government, low taxes, individual liberty and freedom with respect for others and personal responsibility being paramount. Strong law and order, compassion for others less fortunate, but not wild hand outs. Lots of competing small and meduim sized businesses in private hands, not overly regulated and strangled by red tape, or unfairly taxed compared to other major multinational corporate giants that get tax free rides to screw over local enterprise.
The Neo-cons in the Bush Junta are fascists, not conservatives. they give no-bid, cost plus contracts to their corporate friends. thay have increased spending by RECORD amounts, they lie, cheat, steal. This is the most corrupt administration in history, Considering how bad Clinton was, that is saying something!
There exists now a corporate hand out system which has NOTHINg to do with entrprise, initiative or personal responsibility, but everything to do with corporate cronyism. Nothing to do with merit, but EVERYTHING to do with CORRUPTION!
This republican party is NOTHING like true conservatism. I am appalled that any conservative can still support the republicans.
BTW, to curious above.... your founding fathers would be considered terrorist today! as they where back then, they led an insurgency against the British colonial rule in exactly the same way as is happening against collonial rule in Iraq today.

I like the fact that Republicans want to reduce taxes - they believe that the money that the government takes in should be as minimal as possible.
I like the fact that Republicans believe in national security - that a country cannot exist if it does not protect itself. Negotiation has its place, but the best deterrent is a strong defense.
Republicans do not believe that business people, or businesses, are evil and should be taxed out of existence.
Republicans generally trust people to make proper decisions on their own, and that morality and their definition of it do not have to be legislated. That being said, there are some moral absolutes that need to be recognized and respected, as they define us as a culture and a people.
Republicans respect people and the diversity of opinion and diversity of experience that people have. You do not have to be a parrot for the party line, and the GOP is a big enough tent to tolerate a wide range of opinions and degrees of belief. Other parties talk about diversity and tolerance, but don't practice it in that they will not tolerate much of a difference from certain beliefs that they have ordained as sacred.
Republicans generally act in the best interest of their country - they have concrete beliefs, and they respect the history of this country and the way in which it was founded and for how it has prospered. We like to see positive, measurabe outcomes, and are not against experimenting with new and creative policies to try to achieve positive outcomes.
Republicans do not believe that government has to be the answer for everything, nor should it be. We are wary of government, and know that many activities and policies are best carried on outside the realm and control of government - as government is hardly ever the most efficient or most prudent when it comes to handling and disbursing resources.
Republicans believe that the Constitution has stood the test of time and is a fairly sound doctrine for dictating how government and its people interact. Legislatures should legislate, and legislate minimally, and the courts should intervene only when one branch of the government has overstepped its boundaries... The courts should not legislate, as that branch of government is the least accountable to the people in the form of elections.
Republicans believe that creating a healthy business climate can help people help themselves. Tax policy should not be burdensome and should encourage, not discourage businesses from prospering. Government should have the role of oversight in business, not involvement in all of its affairs.

Because:
I believe fetuses are living human beings that shouldn't be murdered by choice.
I believe convicted criminals who are a danger to society should be put to death.
I believe government should stay as much out of our lives as possible. It's purpose is to protect us from foreign threats, not second hand smoke.
I believe that all people should pay income tax because if you don't it changes your perspective on how the money should be spent.
I believe the founding fathers were a pretty smart group of guys and came up with a system worth protecting, rather than being picked apart.
I believe that burning an american flag for whatever reason is an act of selfishness designed to draw attention to a coward.
I believe that lower taxes stimulate the economy and provide more revenue for the government.
The rich get tax cuts because only the rich pay taxes (I am so tired of hearing about tax cuts for the rich I could puke). It is just a cheap baiting technique by the democrats.
I could go on...

I am republican because I believe in keeping my money in my pockets. I take self responsibility literally. I believe in family values. I believe in this country. I love freedom and small government. I am a logical thinker and the solutions I have seen from the Republican side of the house just make more sense to me than what I see from the Democrat side. Especially now that the socialist have taken over and are the voice of the Democrat party.

Other people have all ready answered really well. Smaller government, lower taxes, views on anti-terrorism. Strong support of our military. I may not be a religious person, but I do believe in Honor and integrity. I don't agree 100% with the republicans, but they are better than the alternative.

By principle, Republicans are more fiscally responsible. When they're working right, government shouldn't hinder the economy and have a small federal government. They also believe in the individual providing for themselves.
Local governments should be doing the majority of the work. Sometimes it seems congressmen are only considered successful if they can get huge sums of money from the feds.

Conservative beliefs, less taxes, economic plan, tougher attitude in times of war/terrorism. I pretty much think liberalism is the worst influence on society, culture, and the economy. So I vote for the republicans although they aren't 100% perfect to my preference but a lot closer then the democrats that really don't have a mainstream identity in the United States.

The lesser of two evils. They used to stand for conservatism and smaller big government. But now they just stand for being slightly less socialist than the democrats. So if my only choices are between complete socialism, and mostly socialism, then I'll pick the lesser of the two evils.
What we need is a system in which a thrid party has a realistic shot at winning power.
