I mean this in all seriousness.
We always hear about women being the more civilized sex. I agree with that on many points, but there is one instance where this is far from true. Why do groups of young women at concerts, outside stage doors etc. go into a state of hysteria when they see a celebrity they are attracted to? I can understand excitement, but they scream to the top of their lungs, lose rational thought, and many of them faint. If a gang of men see Britney spears they don't do that, they probably give a few taunts, wolf whistles and ask for a few photos. Men don't go hysterical in that situation (they leave that to drunken friday nights).
I don't understand why they do it, the Beatles famously had to stop playing concerts because they couldn't hear themselves think. Its not like the girls screamed for 5 minutes, they did it for the whole concert duration.
Can someone actually answer this question. It must be a biological and sociological mix. Serious answers only please

Sorry, above went a bit wrong
With all due respect I reject the 'positive' view that they do it because they are more in touch with their emotions, and men do it to the same extent, because I don't think they do. I don't mean this as a men v women topic, I actually do think women are more civilized than men, but this behaviour isn't out of positivity or unity.
Why? because several girls over the years have died through stampedes and crushes in this way. The girls want the guy for themselves, not collectively. What interests me most about it though is that it reminds me much more of religious hysteria, than romantic hysteria. Almost as if the cult of the individual in question eclipses the individual themselves.
But it can go beyond. Here in UK a HUGE band called Take That split in the mid 90's and they had to open up a special counselling hotline. And in the 80s when Jackie Chan got married this happened

Apologies that was meant to be a link to the story that 2 Chinese female fans of Jackie Chan actually commited suicide when they heard he was getting married in the 80s.

I've never been able to understand this either. I am a young woman, and I would find it difficult to even get very excited if I got near a so called 'star'. They're just people too. I completely don't get it.

Alot of these women are 'groupies' and attracted to the status & money these celebrities have, rather than who they are. Some just really like the celebrity. (Men sometimes do the same thing as well.) However, as a young woman, I don't do it & I think it's unattractive, makes 1 look desperate. I love my celebrities, but I talk to them like the regular people that they are, they're human just like me!

It depends on the person, I don't do it. I've been right in front of my favourite group, the Backstreet Boys, actually met one of them, and I didn't go hysterical, lol I said hi to them, talked for about 1 min with one of them... and smiled a lot lol.. ( I'm 22)
I know what you mean, I hate when people do it, Isn't it embarrassing if your idol sees you acting like an idiot? And it makes them want to run away from the fans, scares them... and I don't blame them
I almost get killed, ran over by people because I was in Leicester Square when "The Rock" was there, in TRL. I'm not a fan of him, but I was there when he was coming out so I thought I could just get a picture , and when he came out people went nuts and started throwing themselves at him, running screaming.. etc. including some girls I was with who just wanted attention.. pathetic..
and obviously the guy had to get out of there as fast as he could.. I don't blame him
And by the way, I think guys do it too, but is not as accepted by society for a guy to go crazy and scream "I love you" or things like that, they can go hysterical only when they're about to fight... or watching sports lol

I've often wondered about this, too. I've never done this myself, as a young woman. I think it's got something to do with power = attractive young men = aphrodisiac?
It's like strippers - women think its very funny, while men actually seem to get some sort of sexual thrill. Strange, isn't it?

Because women are able to express themselves better than men. Women allow there emotions to surface whereby, men supress theirs. I guess too that men are historically portrayed as being strong (emotionally as well as physical) and see emotional displays as a sign of weakness and as being non-masculine. However certain 'masculine' activities allow them to display emotions without being viewed as 'weak'...i.e...crying, cheering, jeering at footy matches etc. I would suggest this is a close equivelant to what you described with young women. Therefore , there is an aspect of what behaviour society accepts, by whom and in particular circumstances.

I don't know why pple go crazy over celbs. ( and yes men do it to just not as often). And they have had men kill themselves over stuff to its not as common. Its like with sports some men paint their chest an go to a game like that in freezing cold weather an some don't. I don't think it's socio. or bio. its like who has 'spirt' an who doesn't.

I, being a woman, have also wondered on the above topic.
The best I can come up with, each one wants to attract the attention of the celebrity(ies). So they call. But as each of them calls, each of them tries to call louder, and louder, and louder... and they get over into screaming, and, by maintaining the desire to be noticed, and the competition... they slide into hysteria.
I have no clue if I am correct...

Probably, they have not learnt/imbibed how to behave at public places, how to enjoy a live concert by giving your ears and not shouts distracting the singers and also those serious fans who paid a fortune for the tickets. Its a shame getting beastly in the name of joy.Probably they had never seen men before on this planet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
