I've used computers over 30 years and I use very few abbreviations. I still prefer to use real words. lol
These are reserved for chat rooms. Some people insist on using them in e-mails and even here asking questions, but they are really only proper in chat rooms and text messaging.

But I do use a few and the above are ones I use.

LOL = Laughing Out Loud. Use it when your saying something "tongue in cheek" or something a little funny.

ASL = Age Sex Location. for me that would be 52 Male Kansas /or 52 M USA

LMAO = Laughing My *** Off. Use when something is funny. more that LOL.

ROFLMAO = Rolling On (the) Floor Laughing My *** Off. A reply to something very funny said by someone else.

BRB = Be Right Back. You type this when your chatting with someone or group and you need a break and will be away from computer for a little while.

BBS = Bulletin Board Service. Not used much anymore.

Some others you might see.

JK = Just Kidding.

TY = Thank You.

:) = Smiley face
;) = Winking face
:( = Sad face

I personally don't use any more than these and if someone does spell something I don't recognize I ask they WTF? = What The Fornication? <- what it stands for but not the actual word.
Hope this helps.
