Several reasons. First episode 3 doesn't have the happiest of endings most people would not like it being left at just that for 20 years. Also he decided it would sell better and since he was a new producer and was esentialy betting his carraer on the success of star wars it was important that it sell well. Also back in 77 he did not have the technology to properly make 1-3.

Often, the most interesting way to tell a story is not chronologically. If you saw the first movies without knowing what happens in the later movies, it would be incredibly dry. And, it's so much more interesting to see the characters develop once you know where they're going. You feel like an insider.

Many movies and TV shows are written this way. All "Law and Order" episodes begin with the crime. Then they go back and tell you how and why it happened. "Without a Trace" begins with the person going missing, and then goes back and pieces together a time line. Alfred Hitchcock was famous because the crime happened early in his movies - making them much more suspenseful.

With "Star Wars," it just happens over several movies instead of several hours. However, the story telling method is the same.

Well, actually they are the middle three movies. He made them, not for $$$ but because he thought that if he didn't get around to mkaing any more than those three, they would still be interesting and not leave too much hanging. If he had made the first three movies first and then not made any more, that would have left people thinking- so Darth Vader and the Emporer take over the galaxy? what kind of an ending is that? So he made the middle first, the beginning second, and the end is probably not going to get made. However, the series still has a good ending.

He didn't. The first movie made was meant to stand on hits own. When he decided he could make a sequel he wrote out the the plots of three trilogies (nine movies in all). The first three were about Luke Skywalker's defeat of the Empire; the second three were about the rise of the Empire and the origins of Vader. The third trilogy was about Leia's children and the final defeat of the Empire.

He now says he is not interested in producing the final trilogy

When you make any movie especially a Sci-Fi there is a certain amount of risk. The film may loose money and Sci-Fi films are usually the most costly to make. Lucas felt that he would only get one chance to make a movie like this so It needed to be a stand alone film with good characters and story line. He then later went back and wrote the back story of his villain

Well,Lucas actually started not a very rich man and he says he wanted to make these three (New Hope,Empire,Jedi) because it seemed more feesible. And seeing that the whole story revolves around Anakin,DarthVader he decided to make Phantom Menace,Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the sith only 18 years after he completed the original trilogy. So seeing it from a different point of view it would be funny to see Hayden Christensen as Luke and Mark Hammil as Anakin.

As I liked Star Wars Episode IV, I was always curious as to how Darth Vader originated.
During the light-saber fight with Obi-Wan, he tells him, "I am the master, now".
I wanted to know more about their history together.
While I'm sure money was the biggest motivator, I was glad for the last three, although he could've kept Jar-jar Binks out of it.

The special effects he needed to make the first three didn't exist yet and he knew the last three had a better chance of making money at the time.
