If you look at the ends of the street, there will be a sign pointing the way you need to travel at one end, and a NO ENTRY sign at the other. If you do NOT know what these signs look like, you should NOT be driving, as in the Highway Code there are pictures of the signs you come across the most.

Because there are signs signalling WHICH way you SHOULD be driving so obviously you can get prosecuted for going the WRONG way.

Because you are breaking the law. One-way streets are just that, one way traffic in the indicated direction only. To go against traffic on a one-way street is dangerous and illegal.

Ah... but the question is there is only "one way" to go (directionally). And it seems obvious to me that directionally you were going the wrong way, down a one-way street.

You must be blind, you see before entering the wrong way up the 1 way - there is a sign with NO ENTRY.
