To wf???, jimmy_siddharta & pearlsawme - Very smart, huh? I think the basic concept of Shift is not clear 2 u all, that's y u all r giving such idiotic answers.
A redshift is a shift in the frequency of a photon toward lower energy, or longer wavelength.A decrease in the wavelength of radiation emitted is known as Blue Shift. The decrease is towards the Violet side, so it should be called Violet Shift as Red Shift is rightlly called so.
Y is it called Blue Shift???

Colour names in the spectrum are a matter of convention. Newton originally recognised ROY G BV, and wanting green in the middle added to the symmetry by "inventing" I. However, all physicists would simply refer to the blue and red ends of the spectrum. In fact, the spectrum extends all the way beyond red into radio waves and all the way beyond blue up to gamma rays and beyond.

Violet shift would make more sense. Inconsistencies occur throughout scientific language for a number of reasons, and I can see no good reason for this, unless violet was thought too girly for the macho scientific community.

I can't understand your question.

When red shift is called red shift, blue shift will be called as blue shift and violet shift will be called violet- shift.

I find no confusion.

The word Violet has more letters, therefore takes more time and ink to type. We save time and money by using the shorter "blue".

Due to frequency/wavelength reasons
we often talk about the things which fall in voilet region so its called so...
