It should be compatible with all motherboards if using USB, you will get auto install if using XP anything before that, up to and including 98 you will need the software CD that comes with it.
The only time you get compatability problems is when you put an internal harddrive in!

Most external hard drives are run off of either USB 2.0 or Firewire. Check your computer to see which you have and buy appropriately. Firewire is faster, but isn't as "popular" with PC makers.
Also, keep in mind that if you have an older computer or OS, you may need to do some firmware and/or software upgrades to support larger hard drives. For instance, if you have a Dell PIII running WinXP SP1, you'll need to flash your BIOS and upgrade your OS to SP2 to support anything larger than 130MB.

As most external hard drives use USB 2.0, you want to be sure that you have an available USB 2.0 port, not the older USB 1.x. Check your system documentation. Beyond that, a USB drive will work with any system board.
Oh, you do have to be running Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 or XP. Windows 95 does not support USB.
