The 'product key code' is a unique code provided with your windows software. Sometimes it is on the Book that came with the software, sometimes on the disk jacket, sometimes on the box. This code proves that you purchased the software, and when Windows connects to the Internet, that code gets validated at Microsoft in order to get patches and upgrades.

Microsoft Windows product keys are included in the literature with the product. My experience is that the key is clearly marked on a colorful holoraphic printed label, i.e., "you can't miss it,"

Sometimes the product key can also be found in a small text file on the disk, but this file can be difficult to locate, and can be hidden.

If your computer came with Windows installed on it, then the product code is on a sticker on the back. If it's a laptop, it's on the paperwork that came with it... usually on a piece of paper that says "Do Not Discard"

The keycode will be on the packaging of the Windows CD or on a label attached to your computer's case
