how long will it take me to do it and what does doing new windows actually do for the computer?

It depends on what you mean by 'redo'. You can reinstall windows over an existing copy of windows xp without deleting everything you have. If you format the hard drive, then you are losing everything you have ever saved on the hard drive. Make sure you have a backup of everything that you want and programs that you want reinstalled.
Putting a fresh copy of XP on a computer will help with the speed and any corrupted files that you might have on the computer.

if you are intending to do a format and restoration of pc then it might take around an hour if your pc is some what new....it will finish before that if windows is able to pick up all your drivers....if you have aditional stuff like vga card, printer, scanner and all it might take aditional time to set them up...
