There is an old saying where i come from 'You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family.'

Although you may be very close to members of your family your friends are the people you 'choose' to like rather than being co-erced into it just because they are family members. Although I love my family members dearly because of circumstances my cousins, whose family were very good to me when I was younger and in difficulties, live 100 miles away and it is rare that I see them. At a recent gathering for a funeral it was great to see them again and we hugged and kissed but I found that as the day progressed they seemed to spend more time with their friends than with us. That's just something that happens and i don't blame them. They hadn't seen us for three years whereas friends are seen almost every day.

Having said all that there is another saying 'Blood is thicker than Water' and no matter how much you love a friend the family bond is always there.

Don't forget that your husband or wife was once just a friend too.

I believe that people can create their own "family" from friends who have loved them and been there for them when their families were not. Many people who grew up being abused by their parents have done so. Often an abuser plays brothers and sisters against each other and this breaks the bond between them.

I think it is very possible, it all comes down to how that person treats you, how much respect you receive from them, whether they listen to you, and communicate in return, and how you interact as people in a generalized environment, if your Friend can do this better than a family member or partner even, then its even possible for the two people to fall in love and not realise it until much later on.

If you have found this in a friend, be sure not to lose it, it is a rare thing that happens, and can last a lifetime if you let it, repsect them, listen when they have concerns, be there for them when they need you, (even when they dont), do everything you would do for yourself, but maintian your individual independance......you will then have a 'loving' friend for life.
