The problem is not that we are idiots, per say (although some are). The problem is more that we are lazy as a culture. Especially in the realm of current events, we are used to being told what to think now. Because we have a two party system, the two parties have a much greater control over the media. Thus, the parties have a much more direct 'control' over the public and public opinion.
This laziness has also affected our media. Instead of checking the facts of the stories they are given, they now just repeat what they are told, removing any sort of "fact filter". This problem is most apparent in the fiercly partisan "news" channels like Faux news.
The reporters are also afraid to ask questions that are too hard hitting for fear that they won't be allowed to ask any questions again. This is especially true for the current administration that obviously hates all members of the press that don't say exactly what they want.

Its not fair to all; the VERY small portion that actually follows the news and knows how to make a rational analysis, not just believing straight out what the government or overly biased media says.
The average American is incapable comprehending standard medical literature, designed to be read by PATIENTS. The average American also reads at the level of an 8th grader. This includes 4 year college graduates! How can they make rational decisions pertaining to politics and voting if they lack the neccessary critical thinking skills? As an American I find these statistics frightening and quite embarassing. Honestly the rep is well deserved though.

Most stereotypes are unfair. Since this is in the politics section of YAHOO answers I will relate to a political answer.
Only 15% of Americans relate to a major political party. I would suggest then that only 15% are idiots. The remaining are free thinkers.
By the way you misspelled "stereotypes"

No. Americans are not idiots. Unfortunately, our political landscape and leadership have been embroiled the last few decades on moral issues rather than political issued. Abortion and gay rights have splintered the American people. Too many far right and leftist extremists have entered the American political scene. Moral issues such as these have no place in the political arena. As a result, we've ended up with the moral right in control applying their draconian solutions to complicated world matters.

The average American is basically a good person who will give you the shirt off their back. Just don't try to take it from them though. I believe there are just more unaware people. They are more concerned about their own little world to bother with anything else. To me the far left are idiots and control freaks and contribute nothing to this world. It all depends on your point of view.

I say we shut off all the tv's and take a test a week later. No TV, wild in the streets. How about we stop buying gas for one day and not drive. Oh know, we couldn't do that It might show some guts.
Are all americans idiots? No, but what will it take to wake us all up?

Well..I don't think all Americans are idiots...it's a bit harch...however, most of them are too patriotic and believe anything an Idiot like Bush will tell them...Just because HE is the president...Remember the Film/documentary made by this american journalist on Bush's administration and 9/11....it tells you how 'good' the leaders are in Brain washing their citizens... We are Americans....therefore we are superior....and unfortunately a lot of them think likewise.

I think it's unfair, but I am an american... I do not agree with america's arrogant and destructive foreign policy, nor do I agree with it's racist scapegoating of immigrants, nor do I agree with it's policies towards gay marriage, etc. Many americans are learned and contribute great things to the world. Though a great deal of americans act stupid and spoil it for the rest of us, people should try and not judge. It would make it more pleasant to visit your country if you didn't pass judgement the minute we step off the plane. I hate being held accountable for my country's actions, but your hostility towards my country, I feel, is warranted.

give me a break. Many Americans are not fooled by the left or right press. They are capable of making up their own minds. While I admit that there are many dumb people living in this country (many of them are on this Q&A) there are still numerous Americans who read, absorb and come to conclusions that may be far off the beaten path. Sure we are pompous, arrogant and spoiled, but many of us are educated and can understand what the left and right press is doing. Politics will be the ruination of this country.

Ah... bless we have a deluded American believing that the UK needs to rely on welfare payments from America, trying to demonstrate that they aren't all idiots.
However that particular idiot aside, I think most Americans are cool and intelligent people who when brought together collectively begin to act like idiots. I don't know why it happens, they're better educated than us but that blind belief that their country is the greatest in the world spoils them in large quantities.
