The question provokes speculation and opinionated answers. My 2 cents follow:
The over all consensus in the western, or rather non-muslim world is, I believe, that the muslim philosophy condones the targeted killing of innocent civilians. It appears, at first glance, that the "freedom" fighters consider all infidels valid targets simply because they do not believe as they do.
It also appears that the more moderate muslim community condones to some degree this theology. The beheadings of innocent civilians by muslim extremist is a gruesome example of this belief.
The counter argument that innocent civilians are killed by bombings and sometimes outright intent is a valid argument (for example the rape and murder of the Iraqi family that's been pubicised in the media recently)
There is no question that war is an ugly, brutal and soul scarring event. Any war has a moral effect on the whole human race (especially now, with daily images of blood and gore beeing witnessed by young and old alike)
While both sides have their share of guilt, when people feel they have no choice in stopping wars, they will usually support the lesser of two evils. Morally, the damage incurred by a war is rationalized as an unpreventable price to pay to fight evil. The carrot is that after the war is over the wold will become a better place with extremists and their supporters (i.e. the evil entity) exterminated.
The fight between good and evil rages on, the biggest problem is that both sides see themselves as the "good" side. A side issue is that extremist seem to be holding the whole of the Islamic faith hostage, with their cause being at the forefront of public opinion and the moderate muslim community remaining in a subservient role. While on the other side, the "fight against terrorism" is at the forefront with the moderate peace loving population taking a subservient role to that goal.
"My considered opinion is that there is no bigger fool than he who takes the other person, his opponent, for a fool. As the dictum goes, "You can fool some of the people some of the time but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time."

So there is hope... it just takes time and a lot of bloodshed.

This is totally wrong perception. Because One is living in a country with Majority community / region being Hindu / Jews / Christians, it sometimes seems that everybody is against us. But the thing is How hard the Fundamentalism in a religion / community is which will ultimately determine the view put out in its media about a particular group. Media plays a real big role in maligning / establishing a community at a given point of time like in a war / volatile situation, when everybody seems to be on one or the other side.

Then why is the highest standard of living for Middle East Muslims to be found in Israel?
Why do Palistinians still live in refugee camps 60 years after they left Israel (under orders of the Mufti of Jerusalem)?
Why do they feel the need to kill not only Zionists, but Hindus in Asia and non-Muslim Africans?
It appears to me it is time for the good Muslims (if there are any) to take back their religion from these killers.

Sadly, they seem to do a pretty good job killing one another as evidence the secular violence in Iraq. It is very similar to the Black on Black and Latino on Latino violence here in the USA. Media coverage of this violence portrays a very different story.
The question becomes what kind of "help" do you plan and is that help wanted?
