I would highly recommend purchasing a used RV in good condition with good resale value, then reselling it. For that amount of time, rental cost would be prohibitive. Or look into a short term lease.
Contact some US RV sales in areas you plan on travelling.

If you are talking about an RV, to purchase and resell. I don't think (unless you can afford to waste a lot of money) that is a good Idea.
We rented on for a week two months ago in Tampa bay florida and it was about $1300.plus insurance for the week. It was great fun. But
GAS is much higher now.

Go to RVForum.com, these are all RV'ers that will give you a great deal of really good information on yes or no and great places to see.

It depends on where you're going to be when you want to rent it. You could always buy one from someplace (I know of alot more dealers who sell rather then rent and you could go for a used one and get a better deal probably) and just sell it at the end of you're trip.
Rates wise it depends on if you're buying or renting, of course, and for renting usually the season that you're going in. Fall is usually an "off season" for travel so you should get an okay deal. Picking up in one state and dropping off in another depends on if you're renting from a chain dealer or not. If you bought one for the 4 months you were there it would be easier to sell it anywhere at the end of your trip.

I would work out costs for car hire and hotels then work out camper hire rates and then find out price of camper to buy.
If you have the camper to buy at least you maybe get money if you sell.
This is something i'd love to do.
