To be genetically male you must contain an X and Y sex chromosome. To be genetically female you will have an XX chromosome.

Another definition though, is that if you produce the eggs (the larger gametes) then you are female, and if you produce the sperm, smaller gametes, then you are the male.

Also, some people might say if you have a vagina that you are female, and if you have a penis then you are male.

AND... if your brain is female then you are female, and if your brain has be masculinized and you feel male, then you are male... regardless of genes, internal, or external genitalia.

Males produce sperm and females produce eggs. In mammals the male is xy and the female is xx, while in birds the male is xx and the female is xy, so the chromosomal determination differs among taxonomic classes. In some invertebrates, sex determination is even more complex.
