I shan't name the airport but we were returning to the UK from the 'Count the six-legged cats in Hemingway country' Silver Travellers budget excursion special when, having made the usual polite greeting "Pleased to see you" the airport guy, possibly special forces, spotted the bulge of my hip flask and demanded in an aggressive American manner "Is that a gun in your pocket?" and subjected me to a full body search. As my trousers descended I reminded him of the terms set out in my passport, to wit "In the name of Her Majesty to let the bearer pass freely without let or hindrance". I have recently had my annual check-up, including prostate so this encounter was comparatively pleasant but the injunction clearly set out in my document, carried not one ounce of protection. Will ID cards prevent these assaults?

What a horrible ordeal for you.I cant answer your question but it certainly sounds as if they went a bot too far.I do understand their concerns with events that have taken place but to put you through that.Hopefully ID cards will help.

No if you look suspicious or act suspicious, or have anything bulky on you that looks as if it could be a weapon, they are entitled to search you for secutiry reasons. They are only doing their job. Oh, by the way the scurity person probably thought you was being sarcastic about what you said.

You should have said "No, I'm just pleased to see you," and then maybe this little episode might have had a different outcome.
