It's good that you're asking this. It's the male expectation that women should douche that causes undue pressure on women. Douching is not healthy. The body cleans itself out once a month already. I'm sure that douches were created by some man!!! Fact is, there always is an odor. But, that odor believe it or not is meant to arouse a man. It's not even really conscious. So, so long as a girl keeps herself showered she is clean. When a guy pushes a woman into douching or using sprays it makes a girl feel very insecure. A man that loves a woman's scent is going to bring out a very confident and much more eager woman:)

Douching is not necessary at all and in some cases should not even be done because it can damage the ph balance (among other things) of the vagina. So no douching is not mandatory in fact most doctors do not recommend (read discourage) it except with a prescriptive solution.
If there is an offensive odor then medical attention should be sought. Otherwise the natural odor can be taken care of by bathing daily and wearing fresh cotton underclothes.

douching is not necessary to remain clean and odor free. in fact, i dont know ANY women who do it. its almost like a thing of the past, since studies show its not entirely healthy for women. a good shower with soap keeps the majority of us clean. women have natural odors that arent meant to be "cleaned away" and if the there is an odor that doesnt seem right, its probably because they have bad hygiene in general or another problem not related to whether or not they douche.
-Epidemiologic studies show that douching at least monthly is associated with a significantly higher risk of bacterial vaginosis
-Women who douche have a 73% increased risk of developing PID
-A 1996 National Institutes of Health study found that women who douched weekly, even if it was only a plain water solution, took significantly longer to conceive than those who did not. From this finding, researchers hypothesized that the mechanical process of douching may have adverse effects. The reduction in fertility was strongest in young women, ages 18 to 24, in whom the procedure was associated with a 50% reduction in monthly fertility
-Women who douche frequently and then become pregnant appear more likely to have a low-birth-weight baby and/or a preterm delivery than those who don’t douche. There is a 73% increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, even higher in women who use a commercial preparation
-Frequent and recent douching is associated with a higher incidence of endometritis and upper genital tract infections
-It may be associated with higher rates of HIV transmission
