Ie if you are presented with new ideas to think about, then years later if a government etc presents a similar idea it won't seem so ridiculous? For example a film with aliens in, so if we are alerted to this as a threat ever, we are more likely to accept what is said?

I think the function of all popular culture is to be 'thought experiments'. Think about 2001 - which explored the concepts of space travel and the furthest reaches of technology, epitomised by the monoliths.

Some films are more propagandist than others. You only have to watch "Triumph of the Will" to see how seriously political leaders treated the cinematic medium as a way of brainwashing people into thinking a certain way. Ditto the Russians. (see the link about propaganda films below).

But you're right, I think outlandish ideas prepare us for the day they're no longer so outlandish. After 50 years of sci-fi films depicting alien invasions, I think it would lessen the shock, if only slightly, should it occur in reality!

Great question.

There IS no purpose to today's films. I hardly find them entertaining any more. They're all about violence, sex and drugs. I realize that this is what truly goes on in our world today but, since we live with it daily, do we also have to watch on film? I always thought the film industry was for entertainment; something to help one get his/her mind "off" his/her troubles or worries, not keep it in the forefront of their mind. Why watch a "reality" TV show or movie when all you have to do is take a look around you. Besides, where do you think a lot of people get their ideas to do "stupid" stuff? I'm not blaming ALL our troubled society on the film industry, just part of it. Oh I know, there are some good movies out there, but they are few and far between. So I guess if the real question you're asking is do films affect the way we think, then I would have to say, yes they do.

Where are you posting from and where do you go to see movies? It has been along time since I have seen a movie with an idea in it. Most movies produced today are about cheezy sex and violence. Also car crashes and gun fire.
I have taken to borrowing DVDs of black and white movies from the public library just to see something that doesn't presume I am an idiot. If most of the actors are dead in a move like "anatomy of a Murder" and North by Northwest" that's OK too.
a movie with an idea in it. Wow.

The sole purpose of the motion picture industry is to entertain audiences and make money. It has not changed since Edison put in the first studio. And it won't change any time in the foreseeable future. A Senator from the mid-west named McCarthy tried for months back in the 50s to prove that movies were full of communist propaganda to prepare the American public for a revolution, and all he proved was that he was full of crap.

It is just a movie for entertainment value. If you think too much of the content , it will drive you nuts. Watch and enjoy them and don't think too much about any meaning

no, todays films are simply made with no heart, charcacter, or direction, and are made to fit in the '12a' catergory so all the kids and parents will go see them, = more money
