If you want respect, give respect. Never criticise someone in front of others.
Set goals, boundaries, and deadlines, and do everything to make them clear, and provide the means, training, positive motivation and encouragement to meet them.
Make decisions firmly, but listen to suggestions and postive criticism.
Do not only criticise and correct, but praise and complement.
Lead by example.
Admit clearly when you are wrong.
Be ready to promote, be ready to fire.
Be tough at first, then if possible, ease a little.
Pay what people are worth. Underpaying cheats you both.

1) Lead by example.
2) Do what is always right, don't compromise your integrity.
These are the most important do's and don't's of being a leader.
