Several reasons:
Too much caffeine (coffee, tea and coke)
Eating too late
Bedroom too warm
Some medication affects sleep
Bed uncomfortable
Too much on your mind when sleeping

You need to look at these issues and see about how you can change them. Learn to relax at night (unwind).
Try meditating just before sleep.
If you are still having problems try melatonin (bought over counter at places like Wal Mart) Use only every 2-3 nights not every night cos they wont work every night.
Or if you live in the UK Kalms and Nytol are very good too.
Just think you need to change your lifestyle a little. Good luck, hope you find sleep soon. :)

Many answers are given. My answer is that mind is very physical, though not a part of the anatomy. Further it gets used to a schedule so easily and forgets that as easily. Apart from the theory of worries etc. a hectic and erratic schedule like late night bingos garish music, indiscriminate drugging (not necessarily narcotics) and drinking etc can and do cause a confusion to the mind. When you lie down to sleep, the mind wonders whether it should take you into the sleep mode, drink mode and the like. Your indulgence is the criminal

It could b stress, ur diet, too much going on in ur mind perhaps.Try warm milk, crossword puzzles, reading a book or "exercise"or force ur mind to "go" somewhere peaceful.Meditate. One of these is bound to work. There r things in life that can work without drugs or alcohol.I'm going through the same thing myself ,I haven't had a decent nights' sleep for the past 81/2 months.Maximum amount of sleep in a day for me would b 3-4 hours.Sometimes only 2.Good luck n may god bless.

I had trouble sleeping for a while and I finally realized that the cough medicine I was taking was keeping my brain active. Never take "Non drowsy" medication after noon. They have brain stimulants in them to keep you awake that work only to well.
