For example:
A child of five years old is allowed by his mother to sit, in a darkened bedroom and play Unreal Tournament for hours at a time, every day. The game is rated for extreme gore and violence and comes with a warning for 17 year olds!
How far does the age restriction go? Is it just a guide or does it carry some (legal) weight?

i think it is only illegal for the youngster to go into a shop and buy the game but i think when u are in your own house it is up to the individual adult whether to let the child play the game or not....... hope it helps.

It's a guide, and if you break the guide, nothing happens. You can only buy certain games if you're with a parent [ or of the age ] to buy it. **** the FCC.

The restriction is to whom the game can be SOLD. It is the responsibility of the parent and the person who bought it.
When in doubt, blame the parents. That's what I always say.

The rating are a guide for parents. They are not mandatory for parents to fallow. They may be mandatory for the game manufacturers, but definitly not for parents.

Not that I have heard of but there is a game, Playboy Mansion that could get you in that sort of trouble. It has considerable nudity and simulated sex in it.

these are not government issued ratings and it is the company's policy to not sell them to those under a certain age
their is NO LAW that covers this.
Nor should their be.
