There are many theories all which involve it being created through Al's chemise. Although who exactly this Al character is and why he would be wearing a woman's one-piece needlework undergarment is still a topic of hot debate. The main components of the philosopher's stone is believed to be carrots (which is not to be believed not to not no longer exist) and mercurochrome, also known as mecurochrome, merchurochrome, mercurichrome, and monkey blood. Also the creating of the stone is believed to need energy, energy which also is believed to be an energy needed to create the stone. It was believed that the stone couldn't be created by normal matter. Human life is not normal. Hence why the human life was used in theories. Also there were theories without using a matter or carrot to create it, unless you consider mercurochrome to be matter. Such as the theory to crystalize mercurochrome, which is believed to be a main component of the philosopher's stone, other than carrots. There are bunches and bunches of legends, too many to enumerate, about how they crystalized mercurochrome and when they crystalized enough mercurochrome and when it was made into a stone/crystal, but mostly crystal, it could turn lead into gold, and also aid healing when used as a topical antiseptic. But whenever the crystalized mercurochrome was used and in the making people died from the fumes and such from the mercurochrome when it was made, but sometimes used. Still others just got a stinging sensation and had to blow on it. The mercurochrome crystal, in some theories, is called the fake philosopher's stone. And, in some other theories, it is not. Some theories call it the magical fake monkey blood philosophical antiseptic thingy. But I digress. The name 'Philosopher's Stone' is misleading. It's believed to have many forms: liquid, stone, crystal, powder, tablet, capsule, caplet, chewable, soothing lozenge and many other forms. These are all legends, Al's chemise decade which meant, so did the research on the philosopher's stone. and is now (not now) replaced (not replaced) by a similar (not the same) scientific (not scientific) technique (which may or may not be an actual technique), fancy needlework.

Personally, I think it's a load of old bollocks, but I have got a lot more cranky since I turned 500.

Its not known because its a myth. All that is known is that the 'Philosophers Stone' is a bit of a misnomer. The stone is thought to be a substance, not a rock.

There is a good book about this called Secrets of the Lost Ark by Laurence Gardner. Also, see David Hudson on an Internet search, he claims to have reproduced it.
