It's unprintable. But let me try. I voted for him in 1997, along with a nation, charged with good will towards him and hopeful that he really could find a 'third way', capitalism with a conscience, public and private, tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime. I work in local government, and we all welcomed it.
Nine years down the line, having seen a lot of the machinations of central government, let me tell you want I think of Blair now. He is a belief-free, opportunist, who cares more about his own ego and "place in history" than he does about the nation he supposedly serves.
He has no core political beliefs, and therefore rides the tide of whatever trendy theory is beind bandied about by the tide of consultants that have bled our taxes dry. He has waged wars where a small European country with no manufacturing sector and a failing economy can't afford to wage, and has no business to anyway.
His ministers have proven venal, sycophantic, inept and corrupt in equal measure. He sickens me, as does his money-grubbing wife and presidential entourage. He is an imposter, a phoney, a man of straw who will be remembered as the political leader who squandered immense good will towards him and left office in disgrace.
It hurts me to say all this, because I was once a core labour voter. But I will never vote Labour again.
