My new ATI video card seems to be working strangely. When I play The Sims 2, on one occasion, my video card will not respond (or deadlock) and prompts me to restart the computer. But, when I saw my desktop (after The Sims 2 was closed) the graphics and resolution was still the same.

Occasionally, the computer shuts down without prompt and permission when I play The Sims 2.

Could it have been too high graphical settings of The Sims 2? Or a hardware failure? Please help me resolve this problem, it bites back my The Sims 2 Movie Making business.

Thank you.

very similar thing was happening to me and since i don't know much about computer hardware i took it into a shop and i brought along my sims 2 disc so he could see what i was talking about. after all sorts of tests in the end it turned out to be a defected card because he put one of his own cards in and everything worked perfect then he put my card back in and everything went bad again. i'm still under warranty so im sending it back maybe you might need to do the same..?

sounds like the sort of behaviour you get from overclocking a card too much.

you could get a program like ATItool, (just search for it) and try lowering the 2d/3d clocks, the cards default settings may be a little too high for it.

this problem could also be caused by over heating from too much dust on the heatsink or a failed fan. this could be tested by opening the side (trust me its easy) and pointing a big room fan at the side to see if it helps.

as for setting the settings too high, should just make it go choppy if their too high, as the frames per second would be too low. locking up wont be the settings fault.

First thing to do would be update your video drivers. If that doesn't work head over to www.techguy.org and post a thread there.

if your there right now... you should tell me what grahic card you have... it can be the graphic card,, cpu overheating... not enough ram... since it keeps shutting down... email me for more with what type of graphic card you have....
example...ati 9250, x700, x1900
