It's all a matter of taste - do you want to buy a cadillac or a kia? Just the fact that you want to learn to sew is great, and any machine to get you started in that is a good thing. I think if you can borrow one from a friend or relative first would be best, just to get your feet wet without the expense, and possibly, a guiding hand as well.
If you really want to buy a machine at this point, consider going to Sears and looking at the Kenmore line first. My daughter has one we bought for $99 and it is a good machine.
If possible, test drive before you plunk down your cash. Bring samples of different types of fabrics and check out how the machine handles them. Even without an real working knowledge of sewing, you can see if there are differences in how they handle.
I recommend you look at pattern review after you narrow your choices down. Also, about.com has input from readers on their machines.

my first one was a Singer. they have complicated ones and easier to use 1's. I have my beginer singer still and plan to give it to my daughter. Had it for years and it still works like new. Once you get really comfortable with it though i suggest getting a more complicated one.(more features) but yeah a Singer is the way to go!
Happy sewing!
