Well, depending on how many companies you use, & how you limit the question, your husband may have hit the nail on the head. I hate to disappoint the fans of the Last Son of Krypton, but Superman doesn't hold a candle to the Silver Surfer. I'll provide a link to the Surfer's profile, & that should help convince people of this. Superman really doesn't even measure up to Thor, because Superman is weak against magic & Thor can use magic. His lightning is magical in origin, & Mjolnir is a magical hammer made of uru. Considering Thor could be defeated by the Silver Surfer, there's no contest.
Though not truly a hero, I would actually say that the Living Tribunal is the most powerful being in all the comic universes. The Living Tribunal acts as judge on a cosmic scale. He is omnipotent & omniscient. He is the only character ever shown to be able to withstand the full onslaught of the powers of the Infinity Gauntlet. He's more powerful than Galactus or the Phoenix Force. However, his judgments are based on the most basic laws of the universe, including survival of the fittest.
Anyway, here's a couple of links for you. The first is the Marvel profile of the Silver Surfer. The second is the Living Tribunal. I'm sure your husband will appreciate the information, & might quit bugging you for a while. Best of luck.

Jean Grey/Phoenix/Dark Phoenix! She's been the weakest, the strongest, the gentlest, the most insane, good, EVIL, alive, dead and alive again! As Phoenix, she saved literally everything from an ultimate black hole or something like that. As Dark Phoenix, she once 'ate' a sun and created a supernova that killed 5 billion aliens. She's been everything and that's why I would consider her the most powerful. She has telekinetic/ telepathic powers that are boosted up tremendously by the Phoenix Force. Oh, and I think she had fought and beaten Galactus a few times also. She's an Omega level mutant.

i think its superman coz she is more like an alien and he is so amazing and if u think he has just abt very power. he can fly , x ray vision , super strength and all this stuff that makes him a true hero at heart coz he was so simple when he wa even raised up on the barn .. so apart from the worldly materialistic powers he is also a human and deep down in his heart he is a true hero, which is why i believe him to be a super hero

ok now, there are a lot of "super" heroes out there who are pretty strong, however, if it is limited to strength, i can think of three fast ones, namely Thor, Hulk and Superman. Both Thor and Hulk can lift more than 100 tonnes (but in the case of Thor, if he wears his enchanted belt of strength, it doubles his strength). However, i would still go for the MAIN MAN, Superman as his strength, if equalled with his desire, heart and overall quality, would surpass all of them. That why he's called super-man. No one beats the first, not even Batman...

Superheros eh...
Superman - strongest with awesome abilities suck as X-ray vision, super strength, he helps people always etc. and he can fly really high and stop meteors and stuff.
Spiderman - really fast. keeps his identity a secret because he doesn't want to alarm people.
Batman - very clever. He also helps people though he's only a normal human being.

Superman, no question.
He has every ability other super heroes have and only one weakness. He can fly, run, super sight, super hearing, breathe in water and outer space, lift buildings, x-ray vision, laser beams out of his eyes, and he's almost indestrucible.
And his suit never gets damaged.

The Spectre, who was invented by the same guys that made Superman, is the most powerful comic book character, ever, period. He is supposed to be as powerful as God, with Whom he was occasionally shown discussing his (Spectre's) problems. Disembodied word balloons were tastefully employed.
Forget all those 'magic', 'alien', 'psionic', 'cosmic' heroes, Spectre is the one.
