Good bacteria grow on the gravel. These bacteria turn harm full fish waste into a non harmful form. You need to have some way for the bacteria to live in the tank . The bacteria can live on a
bio-wheel filter(although I don't think that will be enough depending on how big your tank is) or on live plants or in the substrate(gravel). The problem with using sand is it compacts and parts of the sand can become anaerobic. This isn't so good for plants or the bacteria. Salt water has it's own particular sand and that should be used to sustain a healthy aquarium. Do not use salt water sand in a fresh water tank. Be careful what kind of sand you use if you decide to mix gravel and sand (safest alternative.) because some sands can leak out chemicals and make the water very hard or even toxic. Get a good water testing kit and stabilize the water before you add any fish. This might take weeks, but it's well worth it!
P.S. cooking spray Not a good idea.

What kind of fish, what kind of water? If it is marine, sand is best. Tropical, gravel. Cichlid, sand and gravel. Sand is harder to keep clean but the above mentioned fish like it better since it is closer to their natural environment. However, if you have small fish for this tank, go with the gravel since the undergravel filter will work better and their messes are so much smaller. Good luck!!

I think gravel would be the best. you can also use goggle, yahoo or both to search fish tanks or all about fish or some thing else like that and I bet you will find some great websites about fish and fish tanks.

If you will get some bottom dwellers iots better to go on sand since they are scanvenger. If you have marine aquarium its sand again. Buy only filtration sand not normal sand since this will makes the water cloudy.
