I'm 23 and have been saying for years I need to start reading again. When I was younger, I used to read constantely, I loved mysteries like "The boxcar children", "Hardy Boys", I read "Choose your own adventure" books. The last 2 books I have read are the latest harry potter books "order of the pheonix", and "half blood prince" both of which I enjoyed and can't wait for the last book to come out.

Meanwhile what are some good fantasy/mystery books/authors I might want to check out that are more adult reading level that will keep me interested?

Thomas Harris (Silence of the Lambs etc) Hannibal was my fave - the book is so much better than the film (even though I loved the film too)!

Dean Koontz - 'From the corner of his eye' was a good one. He has lots of books.

Stephen King - The dark half, Needful Things, heck, they're all good!

If you like adventure, you should read David Morrell & Clive Cussler. Never liked the latter, but I never really enjoyed adventure... "Long Lost" is an excellent book by Morrell, as are all his books with the character Dirk Pitt.
One of the best works of fiction ever has to be "Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less" by Jeffrey Archer. You should read that as well.
If you enjoy fantasy, Terry Pratchett is your man! He's one of the best fantasy writers. You could try Philip Pullman too.
"The Bartimaeus Trilogy" by Jonathan Stroud is an excellent series. The first especially is brilliant. The books are (in order):
1. The Amulet of Samarkand (DEFINITELY worth reading!)
2. The Golem's Eye
3. Ptolemy's Gate

Hope this has been helpful. Happy reading!!!!

I'd recommend any books by Terry Pratchett (humorous/fantasy), who is "famous" for his Discworld novels. The "Diggers" trilogy is a must-read too!

Terry Brooks (fantasy), who wrote the "Shannara" trilogies and "Magic Kingdom For Sale Sold" (there are 4 or 5 in this series).

Graham Shaw Gardner (fantasy/humour), who has written "Difficulty with Dwarves" and quite a few others (It's been too long for me to remember ALL the titles).

If you're into Choose Your Own Adventures, as I was - still am in a way - I'd recommend you try at http://209.120.136.195/gamebook.php for downloadable gamebooks (most are in PDF format). If that URL is "down", do a search for "Home of the Underdogs", which also has some "Interactive Fiction" games among other things.

"Project Aon" (http://www.projectaon.org/en/Main/Home) is another good place for teen to adult orientated gamebooks, i.e. the "Lone Wolf" series of gamebooks by Joe Dever. They are in HTML format and lots of fun.

Hi there. I'm the author of a new medieval fantasy book that you might like. The title is THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY. It's 445 pages of action, adventure, magic, mystery and mayhem. If you like Conan, LOTR or Harry Potter type books, this is one you'll enjoy. This book is rated PG-13 by most libraries. It's definitely a more adult level fantasy book than the HP books.

Good luck, whatever you decide to read!

Jon F. Baxley (Author, Editor, Ghostwriter and Proofreader)

THE SCYTHIAN STONE (eBook only)
THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY (eBook and hard cover)
THE REGENTS OF RHUM (coming fall '07)

Major Media Reviews:

Publishers Weekly

STARRED Review. A fast pace, sly humor, amusing dialogue and a richly researched background lift Baxley's fantasy, the first of a new series set in medieval Britain. When Merlin's long-ago apprentice Kruzurk Makshare (aka the Boozer) receives a dreamlike visitation from the legendary mage, he learns he must destroy another former apprentice, the villainous Seed of Cerberus. To do so will require a visit to the demon-guarded Blackgloom Keep. Enter young Daynin McKinnon, who discovers a curious rune-covered headstone, which may be the fabled Blackgloom Bounty, and brings it to Kruz's attention. Kruz believes it will provide entry into the fortress, while Daynin hopes the sale of the stone will restore his family's fortunes. The colorful cast of good guys and ne'er-do-wells includes the Pictish ghost of Brude McAlpin liberated from his tomb, assorted pursuing Caledonians and a bemused Prior Bede, whose monastery serves as a hiding place for the Blackgloom Bounty. Suitable for fantasy enthusiasts of all ages.

I recommend Kite Runner. It's about betrayal and redemption between two boyhood friends. Fantastic.

I also like Battle Royale. It's a contemporary Lord of the Flies where a group of middle school children are put on an island, given weapons, and told they have to kill each other because only one person will get to leave the island. So it's about human nature in the face of survival or death.

Evora Jordan's mysteries are very interesting, because she based these on things that really happened. Her lastest came out in May.

Tainted Town has murder, corruption and a ghost in a small town in New Hampshire.

She has 3 Murder Mysteries. The first one is Tainted Sand. This is based on a major case up in Maine... the body was never found.

Chinese Cinderella--Its an autobiography by Adeline Yen Mah. Its the story of an unwanted chinese daughter who is considered "bad luck" because her mother died 2 weeks after she was born. Adeline had to endure a lot in life, but she survived and triumphed, and is now a well known author as well as a Doctor. Her story is touching and inspiring.

MY STORY by Dave Pelzer--Another autobiography. I think Pelzer is the 4th worst abuse case in America. This autobiography tells you of the hurt and abuse he had to go through, life in foster homes, and how he succeeded in life. Today, Dave Pelzer is helping out other people.

THE KITE RUNNER by Khalil Gibran--its fiction. It is a story of the life of 2 boys in Afghanistan. I read it a while ago, and I haven't been able to find a book as good as it. It is so realistic (not everything is "happily ever after"), unexpected (very), touching, haunting, and simply brilliant. It is a bestseller, and I definitely recommend it =)
