They are harmless to you leave them alone and they won't bother you. They consume an unbelievable number of insects each night which could make your stay much more comfortable.I'm sure the landlord is aware of them speak to him most older homes in the northeast have bats nearby

it sounds like you are living in an older building. Contact your landlord, who IS responsible for the upkeep of the structure. You are not a homeowner and this does not fall under a tennant related upkeep issue. The bats however are a good thing as they eat mosquitoes and depending on where you are in NY, they can carry you off sometimes.... at least it feels that way. Until this is resolved, keep a tennis racquet handy and put away the good china.
