is there a specific philosophical set of tenets that someone must fuflill to fall under the classification of 'free thinker'? or is it merely a self-label people award their persons in an attempt to define themselves in some way or another? simply put, does anyone know the source of the term, what it entails, does it follow a specific philosophy or is it just a general label?

The answer is on its way! When one lets go of all perceptions of self, stops judging others, is unencumbered by thoughts of self and their poor emotional responses do not impact their mind, and thoughts do not compound but are observed and understood then finally the ego dies.. And you are free to think clearly.

Anything less is still living with a clouded mind and one will have to keep watching where one is walking else they run into trouble!

someone on any level any topic who thinks outside the box...
I based my answer on life but you can be a "free thinker" in any area.

A free thinker is a made up term used by atheists to make themselves sound more elite than they actually are. No one is a free thinker - everyone adopts the opinions of others, whether it be religious or irreligious. Atheists think they are free thinkers just because they read a Richard Dawkins book, when that kind of 'free thinking' is no different than what they condemn Christians for doing relative to the Bible.

I could tell you but it would cost you.

But seriously, where is your wallet?

I take visa and master charge.

Free thought is any thought that diverts from the established theories of life.

Plese deposit another 50 cents for another three minutes.

But freedom is an illusion. You can't maintain free thought using set logic. So there are boundaries to all thought.

And there is no telling how old the concept of free thought is.

I am sorry but the number you have dialled is no longer in service.

Free thinking is thoughts from the base of matter without any pre-determined mindset or favouritism. Neither religion, nor science are its base but both have certain roles as a catalyst.
