Whoh. Ceanothus needs some special care if you don't want to loose it. back off the snipping until cooler weather arrives... mid september or later and even then, be gentle.

Sounds like it got out of control? too much water. back off before you kill it. it's family members out in the mountains and high desert have been going without any water for months and they will have no worries when the rains do come again in oct or nov. just give yours enough to keep it looking nice in your landscape setting. an occational deep soaking every 2 or 3 weeks at the very most. AND DO NOT FEED 'TIL LATE WINTER. that will also help get it's growth under control.

the fastest way to kill ceanothus is to over water and over feed it.

Yep a good pruning will help train it 2 B a compact shrub, rather than a monster.
U can do it now or later in the year, up 2 U.
It'll not stunt it's growth if it's that big.

Yes, it's quite OK shrubs should be pruned after flowering so that they can make new growth for next year.

Don't go overboard with the cutting back, though. I am not sure how good ceanothus is at growing from old wood but it should be OK with it, since it survives fires in California.
