Use it or Lose it

The saying "Use it or Lose It" seems to apply to the nervous system. During development many new synapses are formed. In fact, some synapses are eliminated later on in development.

This period of synaptic development and elimination goes on to "fine tune" the wiring of the nervous system. Many studies have shown that if the input to a particular neural system is eliminated, then neurons in this system will not function properly.

This has been shown quite dramatically in the visual system: complete loss of vision will occur if visual information is prevented from stimulating the eyes (and brain) early in development. It seems reasonable to suggest that if 90% of the brain was not used, then many neural pathways would degenerate.

However, the brains of young children are quite adaptable. The function of a damaged brain area in a young brain can be taken over by the remaining brain tissue. There are incredible examples of such recovery in young children who have had large portions of their brains removed to control seizures. Such miraculous recovery after extensive brain surgery is very unusual in adults.

Adam chose to give up that ability, and the ability to live without aging or bad health. So God has nothing to do with it, except to give man the right to choose the knowledge of sin over everlasting life. Also, the brain has the data storage capacity to last over 10,000 years before it could possibly get full. The good news is we have the chance to get those abilities back. Unending life, except through traumatic as happened to Jesus, and a brain with its full comprehensive abilities. We can't have immortal life while remaining human. Only spiritual beings, which are in essence intelligent forms of energy, can have immortal life. Than only God can kill them.

Consider the possibilities, to be able to figure out how to get to all those planets, study the bottom of the ocean, and be able to see the smallest particles.

I disagree with the comment below that there is no proof that we only use a small amount of our abilities. Brain scans show the activity areas of the brain, an it is a very small area. When I ran a 105.5 temp for three weeks, while on life support, I essentially cooked that area of my brain, but the activity center moved to a new location. A very rare event and I was in a coma for a long time.

Ask your local anatomist or physiologist this question and watch they're response: they'll probably look at you as if to ask "what in the hell are talking about?"
Different areas of the brain have different purposes or functions, and so at any given time different areas are being used more than others. The neurons are inextricably connected so that you cannot use only a certain percentage of your brain. We use the whole thing.
Now, some people do put theirs to better use than others...

ever heard of emergency uses? nah just kidding
anyways, the human body is still a great mystery.
i guess the extra neurons in our brain is for back up uses.
you see, neurons in our brain will not reproduce and it has a very low (almost nil) ability to repair itself. so.... if you get hit on the back of your head real hard, the nerves in your brain will die. they won't come back.
if your intelligence comes from the full 100 % of your brain. wouldn't you be stupider everytime head butt a soccer ball? just a thought there...a scary thought....

let's just say that humans have great potential. so if someone tells you that they can't be any smarter, you can say "yes, you can, you still have 88% of your brain undeveloped" AHA

i once read a science fiction, it says that humans are the only ones in the galaxy who do not use their full brain. this is because the jealous aliens killed all the 100% efficient person.

another idea is that we are the replicas of god and god uses 100% of his brain (thus being god) but when he created humans he decided to limit our brain capacities (a little bit weird to have 10billion gods running around of earth, isn't it)

just some thoughts there,

peace

Sabina, The death of a family member is amazingly not user-friendly, fairly once you're youthful. I lost my father to lung maximum cancers. i grew to become into older than you, yet i comprehend the discomfort you're feeling. i comprehend that the sense of loss can now and returned be overwhelming. Another of those statements that has been around for a while (as Chas Chas 123 says). However, please keep in mind that there is no empirical data to support this and there won't be for quite some time. True that are idiot savants, yogis that can control their breathing, people with extraordinary esp, geniuses of all kinds; however, this does not necessarily mean that others are not using their "full capacity." There is not a scientist on the planet that could prove the statement and it is just that. Rejoice in your mind and keep curious. Explore and discover. Keep engaging your mind and you will be happy.

Some people only use 8%, so you're more luck than most. I guess the nature give you extra just in case the parts used are not working. I watch documentaries, it said, children with brain cancer can have half of their brain removed, and they still grow up normal and fine!

Of course we use all of our brain. If we could manage with a smaller brain, it would have huge advantages. Think of all the women that die during labor because they have to give birth to such big-headed babies. No, it's not a joke.

But we don't use all of our brain all the time.

Why do you think you just use 12%?
Einstein is supposed to have said soemthing along these lines - but what did he know about the brain?

Use your own and don't believe every myth you hear!
