When I started working for Coca-Cola years ago, a woman conducting the orientation for several of us who had started the same day kicked off the session by telling us she was going to teach us how to read any language in the world. She proceeded to write several curvy lines with dots dancing around them on the board and said, "This is Arabic. Somebody tell me what this says." Everybody just looked at each other. After a moment she drew the familar swoosh under the characters, and it was obvious that what she had written was Coca-Cola.
Business Week has done a study every year for some time trying to rank the value of different brands, and Coca-Cola has consistently been ranked number one as the the most valuable brand in the world. Several other studies confirm that it is the most recognized brand in the world (Marlboro is often cited as the second most recognized brand).
I've included a link to the Business Week list of the top hundred from July 2006.
