Not water - very dangerous. a good way to give yourself a bacterial infection known as swimmer's ear. Very painful, you don't want it. Check with a doctor before accepting any medical advice.

The pharmacy will sell you an olive oil for this purpose, although I have no idea why it should be any different to that sold in the supermarket. My husband has to have this done on a regular basis and the nurse told him NOT to put a plug of cotton wool in because all that will do is soak up the oil! One ear at at time just before you go to bed and lay on the ear you didn't treat so that the oil stays where it was intended. The other ear the next night - and so on. It is usually only necessary if you have really hard wax in your ears, though. Check with your nurse first.

Place a few drops of olive oil into your ear before bed time and place a small piece of cotton wool into your ear to stop it coming out. Do this for about a week before you have your ear syringed.
Please be careful not to stick the cotton wool right down into your ear canal and do not do anything that will obviously damage your ear and your hearing.

According to my local district nurse, olive oil put in carefully with an eye dropper, then a little cotton wool to hold it in.
Craig, they wont syringe your ears unless you have softened the wax first.

Put Soliwax Ear drops - 3 drops in each ear twice a day for one week before getting ears syringed.
The above strategy is very popular in my town and I am also benefitted by that.
Avoid self-cleansing of ear by ear buds as it may push wax deep in canal and may damage ear.
BEST OF LUCK
