When you enter a Japanese home (or certain buildings such as temples and shrines, even some hotels and restaurants) the first thing you do is to remove your shoes - such a sensible way of keeping the floors clean! Usually you are given some slippers to wear. In some places there is even a special pair of slippers to wear in the bathroom (toilet) only! If you enter a 'tatami' room i.e.one with wall to wall grass matting, you remove your slippers too, and go in stockinged feet.

It is true that they don't wear shoes in Japanese homes, but they usually wear some kind of socks. Anytime, you see pictures of Japan, there is usually always a picture of the shoes lined up outside the door to a home.

Arabic culture is like that, too. I have to take my shoes off when I go in my neighbor's house. They are a little less strict though. I think in Japan you have to take your shoes off outside the door, which isn't exactly practical for Michigan winters.

actually throughout Asia, it is traditional
not to wear shoes in the house... in fact,
if you think about what your shoes step
in on the street, it's rather disgusting to
wear them indoors!
