I don't know about it being on HP computers, but there used to be an early video game on Atari that did that. I remember playing it. Must have been around 1982.

I remember that game. I don't know what it was called though. I remember it looked a lot like minesweeper, with a bunch of gray squares. I also liked the DOS games: nibbles and gorilla.
