While at work, my fiance called me and was scared ****less because she was hearing the door try to open. I want to look into purchasing a small handgun for her defense when I am away and for myself when I am there. What are some good brands that are relatively cheap?

For Home defense a simple revolver is hard to beat.
Autos take practice and getting used to.
With a revolver you are set.
I suggest you visit local pistol ranges in your area, ones that
rent handguns by the hour. You and your wife try some different
revolvers and see what feels good to both of you.
Depending on the size of your wife's hand (and yours) and
considering the purpose I would look at 38 special caliber
revolvers.
Many people will tell you a lot of advise that will be off by a mile
This is what I do,I am a handgun expert.I have been a gunsmith
and competitive pistol shooter for over 20 years.
The reasons for the 38 special choice are the following.
1)A 357 caliber,(which will also shoot 38 sp.) will tend to be larger
and many women's hands won't be comfortable with it.
2)A 357. can fit both your hands with different grips,(there are
many good ones) but the weight and overall size are still an issue
3)A357 bullet may,(very easily),"over penetrate" and could be a
"hazard" to property and persons beyond your walls.
4)A "K" or "J" frame Smith & Wesson, or similar sized Colt or
Ruger,in 38 special, with comfortable grips, will be perfect.
5)Fixed sights instead of adjustable are a plus for your use.
Adjustabe sights will snag and get caughtup in clothing, bedding
etc. ,Of course this tends to happen when you are rushed and
there is an emergency.
6)Final: A "K" or "J" frame Smith & Wesson or similar sized
Colt or Ruger,38 special,with fixed sights,comfortable grips,
using "Winchester Silver Tip" ammunition.
7)I have my choice of "any" pistol or revolver in the world.
What I have laid out for you is what "I" use.

Take the time to try revolvers as I have described here at local
shooting ranges.Call ahead to see who has what.
If salesmen at the gun store try to sell you an auto loader just
stick to your choice.
The gun I described is "very reasonably priced" Be careful of
salesmen trying to sell you a "modern autoloader"
This will be much more money and doesn't fit the purpose.
Check with your local gunsmith for nice used revolvers, good
advise,and some comfortable grips.
Print out my advise and show it to any professional worth his
salt and they will agree 100% with my advise.
Go for a couple of afternoons to the range and get some basic lessons, including gun safety.Go once or twice a month
to become familar with the feel and point of aim of your handgun.
If you have any questions contact me,I'll help you.

Instead of a handgun, why not get a dog? A really large, loud breed, like a rottweiler or german shepherd or chow would work well. They are easy to train, and can easily get in between an attacker and your loved ones, giving her time to get away. Also, the dog can do something a handgun can't: hear an attacker while you are sleeping, and make noise.

Your best bet are pawn stores, they usually have a good range of cheap but reliable handguns. Your best option would be a revolver, less likely to jam or have problems with the safety catch etc. You could also ask your local range for advice, the guys working there usually have several of their own guns and would be able to give you good advice. You may also want to ask your local community police officer for advice on home defense and/or ways of improving your home security so it doesn't have to come to the point of either you or your fiance having to fire a gun....

Get training first. I can tell by your question you are not knowledgable about weapons.
