I feel like a simpleton even posing this question, but I'm going to enter 12th grade this month, and taking Calc I AP on top of an already tough course load.
For those of you who have done this before, is it really as tough as my stupid mind is making it out to be?

I took an AP in each of the major subjects my senior year, and honestly, it wasn't bad at all. Other than your anticipated college major, math and English are probably the most important subjects to take for (potential) college credit. Also, if your class was anything like mine, you won't even have to do homework for it. The time cost will most likely be in learning the material, and while it'll probably be in your best interest to work out at least some of the problems regularly to accomplish this goal, this task should not be too time consuming on a daily basis.
I obviously can't guarantee that it'll go this way for you too, but since colleges generally like to see the reasoning ability that's equated with mathematical understanding, I'd recommend taking the AP Calc class.

When I was in high school, calculus was not normally taught. When I got to college, our first math class was calculus. However, the phsics course started with the concepts of velocity and acceleration and the instructor assumed we knew calculus! If you are planning to take any technical or math courses in college, high school level calculus would be a benefit. How hard is it? I don't think it's any harder (at the basic level) than algebra, trigonometry or geometry. If you could handle those courses ok, you shouldn't have a problem with basic calculus. I think calculus is fascinating, much more interesting than other high school math.

I took 2 years of Calculus in highschool and I was know as Big Daddy Derivative.
I now work in a career that would have better suited me for taking two years of drama rather than math.
Do I regret it? ABSOLUTELY NOT!! Math is a martial arts. You may never be called upon to use it but its a mental discipline that is really wonderful to have.
It will be tough but if you stick through it, it will make you strong.

You should definitely take it. It is a good course and will definitely change your thinking of the world around you.
It is also very useful for college credit. Also, admissions will look at the fact that you took AP calc positively.

If you enjoy maths and have a real use for it (say, you want to take maths beyond HS), then I would take it. Calculus is one of the most powerful tools in mathematics and it has wide-reaching implications for all maths.
Besides, finding areas under parametric curves is fun. ;)

Newton, after he first created what we know refer to as his three laws, did not publish his work for two decades. Until he could invent calculus, and then use it to explain the work he did.
Calculus is the foundation of just about all fundamental understanding we have today. I would suggest learning it.
