When we are talking to ourselves, the reasons vary according to what we are talking to ourself, like
when we are talking about a a work that has to be done, we are reminding or projecting our concentration on that part of work, so that we may not forget it.
When we are yelling or showing anger and talking to ourself, we are giving vent to our troubled feelings. usually we need to express our opinions and feelings on a certain issue. in what way we are right and in what way the other person was wrong and so on. We are justifying ourself in one way and also we are expressing our thoughts. we may do the same thing if any close friend is available at that time, but since most of the time, we are busy, we do self-talking !
when we are talking of some wishes or our likes to ourselves,
we are either recollecting the memories of pleasant things we had at a time or we are redirecting our concentration to achieve something we care for so dearly.
thats how the reasons vary according to the topics ;-)
Good luck. Bye

Like those prison inmates, they are too innocent, and get caught more easily. Otherwise, the incessant chatter of the mind (noiselessly, not at all silently, inside) is the major hurdle to be crossed over even on the spiritual path. This loud talking to self is not necessarily a spill-over of the excess from noiseless-inside. Socially, those who can contain the chatter within themselves are more acceptable, and adored, but if suppressed too much, the cost that a person pays is irreversibly damaging enough, in terms of health (mental health and physical health!)

Some people talk to themselves out of anxiety or other strong emotions. Some people just do it because they're bored. And still more do it to keep themselves organized.
And then there are the crazy people...

I talk to myself a lot. I tend to do it more when I am alone or think no one is around. I think I do it to hear a voice so I am not so alone. I have been doing it more and more over the years. I think I have gotten more comfortable and don't worry about doing it around people. It is a simpkle way to talk yourself thru whatever you are doing.

I believe that people talk to themselves when they feel alone-you say that you work at an office which means that you may feel alone- and when they have really strong feelings such as fear or anger..
Why?Maybe it's away to defend your being from loneliness or encourage yourself to proceed to an action...

At times, not always people tallk to themselves, to find some solutions, some sort of consolation, to make sure what they're doing's right, to try to remember what they've got to do, in ignorance, to break their solitude & so on, which may vary according to their surroundings.

Talking to yourself is perfectly normal. It is a skill we develop as children, which Vygotsky termed 'inner' or 'private speech.' It is used as a means of self monitoring and control.
Hope that helps.
