I have read a few novels that have become Oprah choices...the thing is, I read them BEFORE she gave her stamp of approval. I was a bit dismayed when Anna Karenina became one of her "choices." It's not so much because it's not worthy of the "Oprah" stamp of approval, but because people SHOULD be reading books anyway, especially Tolstoy and the other world greats. As to what my favorite Oprah Book is...well...I don't know, but I will rank anything by Toni Morrison high up on the list, and well...Oprah did put the big "O" on the cover of "Paradise" which is a difficult, but rewarding novel that I didn't so much enjoy as learn from.

I have read most of Oprah's books, long before they became "Oprah's Book Club" choices! Many of them are classics written before she was born!

However, Oprah is a powerful woman with a great deal of influence. If she can repackage these masterpieces so that they touch another generation, I applaud her. Great literature can open minds and change lives. As a true lover of the written word, I know the potential of what she is doing - and it's pretty close to being about God's work.

Poisonwood Bible is amazing. The characters are well-developed and the plot is heart-breaking but inspiring at the same time. I don't know if I read it before or after Oprah did/
