Well, Independence Day came out first before the remake of War of the Worlds but there was an old War of the Worlds movie based on a radio hoax many eons ago. Yes, they are both similar in that we are invaded by aliens...to be exterminated, it was just different story lines on how it was to happen and how they would do it. To me, War of the Worlds was a much scarier concept with all the blood and guts being sucked out of the body and such....that part was just gross. Both movies also showed a concept on how they would use our own technology against us. I did, however, like both movies. I love movies that get my heart pounding on what is gonna happen next!!

I think they both stole parts from each other. The look of the aliens in War of The Worlds looks just like they did in Independence Day. And Independence Day stole the ... not sure.

No matter who stole from who, Independence Day was a far better movie. War of the Worlds was about the worst movie I have seen.

Since the first radio broadcast of War of the Worlds predates Independence Day by about 60 years, I would say that Independence Day stole the idea.

War of the Worlds was actually out as a movie in the 50's. Independance Day was a version of that movie. Both wer very good movies in their own way. I didn't care for the latest version of War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise. The movie looked grainy

The only similarity between Independance Day and War of the Worlds is that aliens are trying to invade earth. Seeing as how WOTW came out first as a radio show, then became a movie in 1953, the idea for ID4 was probably generated by it.

(even though Cruise is a good actor, I liked the original WOTW better!)

The novel, War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, was written long before the movie Independence Day came out, and I am sure that Independence Day was using the concept of an advanced alien military that was presented in the book.
