Because so long as we're in fear, we'll consume. The government and media have ran consistent campaigns of fear since the Cold War. Duh.

It's the practical application of Gestalt psychology to life: that which is odd gets more attention than that which is ordinary.

Any cranky critic who says that the human animal behaves in any other way is deluding himself.

Thus journalists are merely giving the public what that same public is interested in.
