I'm specifically looking for where I can get it proofed and edited by new eyes.

It's already gone through revisions, but I know it needs work.

I'm not trying to find out if my story is good or not. I'm trying to get it proof-read and edited.

Join a local writer's group. A good one's members read aloud their works and then each person, in a very ordered fashion, makes positive and helpful comments, no harsh criticism.

I have belonged to one for over 2 years and my writing has improved 150%!!

The content isn't remarked on...in other words, nobody has the right to say you shouldn't be writing about such and such. What is commented on: punctuation; spelling; grammar; word usage.

Then once you've improved your writing, you can find out places to submit.

Very helpful!!

If you are serious about you story being published then I would start speaking with an editor in your area. Friends and family would be the first people that I'd ask, only because I would want the story finished before I presented it to any one.

You may want to try www.literotica.com It's a site mostly for erotic stories BUT they do have a non erotic section with volunteer editors who can give you pointers. I'd also be happy to proof read anything.

Well, send it to a professional literary criticism service, also known as a literary appraisal agency, of course. They charge you to let you know if your story is good or crap.
