In the book (a good read) by H.G. Wells, you find out that the martians had such advanced medical technology that they had evolved beyond a need for an immune system. Thus they were easy prey for all kinds of earth bacteria and viruses. This part is never really explained in the movies, it's just stated that they didn't have immunities to our particular microbes.

The overall environmental conditions of the earth. It's like what would happen if you suddenly put an Urban person in the jungles of the amazon. That person will not survive because he is not adapted to that environment.

It's the same premise as the war of the worlds aliens, humans have adapted to the earth for thousands, millions of years. And have evolved to be able to survive in it. It's not one thing that killed them, but a combination of everything.

Chapter 27, The War of the Worlds
HG Wells

"My knowledge of com- parative physiology is confined to a book or two, but it seems to me that Carver's suggestions as to the reason of the rapid death of the Martians is so probable as to be regarded almost as a proven conclusion. I have assumed that in the body of my narrative.

At any rate, in all the bodies of the Martians that were examined after the war, no bacteria except those already known as terrestrial species were found. That they did not bury any of their dead, and the reckless slaughter they per- petrated, point also to an entire ignorance of the putrefactive process. But probable as this seems, it is by no means a proven conclusion."

The same kind of thing that killed millions of Native Americans... viruses. Humans have developed natural immunities to billions of pollutants in the air... an invading alien race would more than likely succumb to some of them.

In the old movie, "War of the Worlds" germs killed the aliens. They had no defenses in their immune systems against our germs. I hope this helps.

Bacteria....they weren't used to the germs in our world, so their immune systems couldn't handle it. Think of back in the day when the Europeans brought disease to the new world and killed many natives...and visa versa. (I never said I was a history buff. lol)

First they were distracted by the birds, remember? That gave the soilders the chance to kill the leader. It had to have control over others lives because they all died after the leader's death. Not sure if I'm right, though.

They were probably bored to death like most of the audience. But in reality, they had no antibodies for the microbes here on earth. Check out the opening credits for a clue.
