For now, I think the PSP is the clear winner. The PSP is a beautiful WLAN entertainment center, being able to seamlessly do videos, photos, and music in addition to games. It speaks standard 802.11b right out of the box with minimal tweaking. The bar running homebrew is also very low: if you have a PSP with firmware version 1.5, all you have to do is copy the homebrew program to the PSP via USB, and just run it.
The Nintendo DS has a smaller screen, and it seems a bit more difficult to get the DS to play homebrew, but it has a touch screen. The downside to the PSP is that alphanumeric input is painfully slow, and that will limit the amount of applications that people can write for it. The DS, however, has a touch screen. If the homebrew community is active enough, they can potentially put out a lot of productive applications that use the touch screen as a rather fast keyboard-like input device. So, there's a lot of future potential.
Still, if you're buying one today, the PSP seems more immediately interesting. If you won't get one until next year, then who knows?

It truly depends on why you are buying it. If you are going to be surfing the web, listening to music, watching movies and playing games....then definately go with the PSP. If you just want to play games and that's really it, there really isn't a point in spending 100 bucks more for the PSP when the DS will fit your needs great.

The PSP isn't all that great. I actually bought one for games and got bored. I later sold it for 360 games, then bought one again when the price went down. The games were still pricey, awful compared to PS2 and the video downloads just got boring. The DS is cheaper, has cheaper games, and the games are more fun to play. The DS Lite is a must have!
