I usually buy ready-made costumes, but here's some sights for historical costume sewing patterns I've known about for a while and have high standing. What you'd want is Medieval/Middle Ages and Renaissance/Elizabethan. I've fantasized about sewing a custom costume for myself, and maybe I will one day. Just haven't yet. Good luck, and have fun creating the perfect costume! =)

There are a lot of books out there with information on true patterns. I do not know how easy they are to use as I am a lighting designer, not costumer. Contact a costume design professor this is just teh kind of project a lot of them really get into, they should be able to help, or at least point you in the right direction.

I would call a museum that has a display of costumes. The curator may know of some vendors who sell these types of patterns. Also, you could contact a theatrical group in your area for advice.
