The reason is purely sexual accessability. Women are supposed to be submissive and give it up to "their man" whenever he requests it, according to all major religions. It's just a load of crap.

I suppose it fell out of vogue at some point.
Think about what the Romans and Greeks wore. A tunic is a skirt, and you mentioned the kilt.
How do you picture am Franciscan Monk? In a dress?
Men used to carry purses as well.
Women were not allowed to even wear pants until recently.

Part of it has to do with the fact that historically speaking, women were not supposed to arouse any prurient interest.Dresses and skirts from back when had a way of concealing ones figure. It all has to do with what society deems acceptable for each gender. If you want to wear a skirt,or kilt,go for it! Guys in kilts are hot!

My boyfriend once wore a denim skirt.
He dressed up like cupid and ran around in a toga and wings for valentines day.
I think it's cute. ^_^
