i work in sales and i don't make 5.15 and the people who say it would hurt small business need to remeber the more money people have the more they will spend. i am sure the tax rebates some people got a couple years ago most spent it as soon as they got it.. and training would be great but it is hard to go to school and work and have the money for gas. the more people can depend on them self the less they will depend on the goverment

Living on minimum wage is almost impossible. I think it is funny that minimum wage hasn't changed in years but congress has managed to vote on their own pay raises in the last few years.

No I have tried it with a child and you can't do it. I live in Baltimore and the sorriest thing I have ever heard in my life was that I made too much money to get assistance from Social Services. That is the sorriest s h i t I have ever heard. I have skills that should have made it easy for me to get a better job but after three weeks of looking I took my minimum wage job and I ate once a day to make sure I had enough money for diapers and food for my child. I make more than that now and I will never go back to minimum wage.Life is not living on minimum wage

There is currently a bill in the Senate to raise the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour but it will not pass because the republicans attatched it to a bill which allows rich kids to keep more of their inheritances.
No one can live off that much money. I think one solution could be getting rid of the minimum wage altogether. Having one only legitimizes and condones paying people less than they need to live. Perhaps if we did not have one, employees would lobby more than they do now against unlivable wages. And employers wouldn't have the government supporting their decision to pay less. Regular market forces will drive pay upward.

i make more than minimun wage at my present job, i live in the midwest, in a tiny town that doesn't have many places to work to begin with...i can not envision living off $5.15 and hour...i don't think ANYONE should have to work for that amount of money and do some of the jobs i have seen these people do for it!
with gasoline the price it is now, there is no way these people are ever going to get anywhere...no one really WANTS to carpool (who IS that guy carpooling with you, anyway?)...no one WANTS to risk a lot riding public transportation, either...no one WANTS to give that much for gasoline, either...it's ALL politics
if they would raise the minimum wage, people could afford to pay a little more for things, including gasoline...you know as well as I do that it won't go up to even $6 an hour, if at all...and really the 85 cents you would be getting will just go into the next jack up of the gasoline for your tank to get you to work to make it...vicious political cycle

Truthfully, NO you can't I would work for less than $40 /hr. You will have to let the goverment help. I know that it's hard to lower your pride but get assistance from the gov.( man that like an extra 5 an hour if you add it all up. Take advantage of it if the min wage will not increase

No, can't live on it. It's been proven time and again. Minimum wage and living wage are far apart. Especially obscene when you think that minimum wage has been $5.15 for ten years and all the raises Congress has voted for itself in that time.

minimum wage is about 10,000 a year before taxes and Social Security and state taxes. That leaves you about $ 6,000 to rent an apt, buy food, pay electricity and any other thing they may need like toilet paper!
If they took their whole salary they could only afford a $500.00 a month apartment! None of those around here! Nor is there any public transportation!

Minimum wage couldn't get anybody one small apartment or even a room nowadays. I think because politicians primarily come from backgrounds where they were born with silver spoons in their mouths, many of them couldn't even tell you what the minimum wage is anyways if they fell over it. Yes, maybe politicians salaries should be based upon the minimum wage ... it will be godspeed once this occurs to see how fast it is changed to something liveable indeed!

I like your theory, but I would like you to consider a few points. 1. Who actually makes minimum wage? 2. Won't it drive up the cost of goods and services in our country? 3. Won't it cause small business owners to cut jobs in order to pay for the increase? 4. Couldn't we create a job training program instead to help people get better jobs?

Hell no you can't.
There is a diffrence between minimum wage and living wage.
I saw the guy who did "supersize me" on Operah and he went 30 days living on minimum wage. He had to support him and his gf/wife. The bottom line of the show is that it sucked and hardly possible.
