Depends if you are male or female and who's hand you are shaking...male, female and under what circumstances it is. For example you are at a funeral.....you are giving your condolences, you would shake their hand soft. You are going for a job interview...firm handshake. You meet you significant other's mother....soft, father...firm.

i hate that ppl have to say a firm grip...i dont give firm grips when i shake someones hand...im not trying to prove anything...only that i deserve the same respect as i give u...that doesnt mean i have to crush the other persons hand...many may see this as a sign of weakness but it isnt...this is how i am, and if u dont like it, its a shame...but usually i get my hand crushed...lol

It leaves a good impression, that you are self confident and know who you are.
I interview a lot of people in my job, if I get a soft handshake in the intro you are already scoring negative points, that you have to dig yourself out of in the interview.
